Structured Datasets Supporting FAIR Principles

Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability—by providing a structured and flexible approach to data organization and sharing. The dataset feature on BOLD is designed to significantly enhance data organization and accessibility, serving as a valuable addition to BOLD’s data management system. While datasets share some functionalities with projects—the primary record containers on BOLD—there are several key differences that make them a powerful tool for users.

Key Differences Between Datasets and Projects

Unlike projects, which serve as the foundational containers for records, datasets are independent collections. This independence allows users to categorize and compile records based on multiple criteria, tailored to support specific research goals. Any user can create a dataset using published records; however, including private records requires permission from the manager of the project that holds those records.

Collaboration and Data Sharing

Once a dataset is created, its manager can share it with other users to promote collaboration and data sharing. Access to datasets is managed through an Access Control List (ACL), similar to the system used for projects. This ACL controls who can access and interact with the dataset, ensuring robust data integrity and secure collaboration across the platform.
